The NFL Kansas City Chiefs fired coach Herm Edwards late Friday following a dismal 2-14 record in the 2008 season.
The move, which was expected, was announced by team Chairman Clark Hunt, who said the search for Edwards' successor was under way.
The Chiefs hired Edwards after he had coached the New York Jets for five seasons.
On behalf of my family, I want to thank Herm for his service to the Chiefs,
Hunt said in a statement. After careful deliberation over the last week, (General Manager) Scott (Pioli) and I decided that it was in the best interests of the Chiefs to move forward in a different direction. This was not an easy decision. Herm is an outstanding football coach and a man of integrity. We appreciate his leadership.
Edwards led the Chiefs to a 9-7 record and an AFC playoff berth in 2006, but the team slipped to 6-26 during the following two seasons.
