Nadal, Tsongoas in Aussie Open quarters
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open Monday.
Andy Murray, however, is out.
Nadal defeated 13th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
I am playing well, but you never know if it’s going to be enough,
said Nadal, who stroked 33 winners and committed only 11 unforced errors against Gonzalez.
He meets sixth-seeded Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals.
Murray, seeded fourth, fell to 14th-seeded Fernando Verdasco 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Tsonga, seeded fifth, eliminated ninth-seeded American James Blake 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Tsonga and Verdasco now face off in the quarterfinals.
Simon gained his quarterfinal berth by beating the 12th seed, Gael Monfils, who retired with a right wrist injury while trailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
The quarters will get started Tuesday, as a second-seeded Roger Federer will meet eighth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro and a third-seeded Novak Djokovic will go against seventh-seeded Andy Roddick.
The Nadal-Simon and Tsonga-Verdasco matches will be Wednesday.
