Gonzalez reaches quarterfinals in Chile

Defending champion and No. 1 seed Fernando Gonzalez survived an upset bid Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the Movistar Open.

Gonzalez produced eight aces in defeating Maximo Gonzalez 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) on the clay courts of Club Naval de Campo Las Salinas.

Also reaching the quarterfinals were qualifier Pablo Cuevas, Juan Monaco and Paul Capdeville.

Cuevas advanced to the quarterfinals at this tournament for the second straight year by defeating No. 3 seed Albert Montanes 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
