Yankees score seven runs in eighth to beat Orioles

TORONTO (Reuters) - Bernie Williams hit a two-run single tokey a seven-run eighth inning rally, lifting the New YorkYankees to a 13-8 win over the Baltimore Orioles in theAmerican League at Yankee Stadium.

Trailing 8-6 after squandering an early 6-0 advantage, theYankees pounded B J Ryan in the eighth inning to regain thelead after the Orioles went ahead with three runs in theseventh.

Jason Giambi started the eighth inning rally with a homerbefore being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. AlexRodriguez also walked with the bases loaded in the inning toforce in another run.

New York sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, withthe majority of the damage coming off Ryan.

Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer for the Yankees andHideki Matsui also homered for the Yankees, who had 14 hits.Derek Jeter had two hits and scored three runs for New York.

Jason Anderson (1-0), the fourth of five Yankee pitchers,went 1-1/3 innings for the win, allowing one run on one hit.Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth.

Ryan (1-2) was nailed for five runs on three hits in just2/3 innings, taking the loss, as Baltimore used seven pitchersin the marathon game that took more than four hours to play.

Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons homered for the Orioles anddrove in two runs, as did Luis Matos.

In Monday's other AL games, Travis Hafner hit a pair ofhome runs and had five RBIs as the Indians beat the DetroitTigers 9-3 in the opener of a day/night doubleheader inCleveland.

Hafner had four of the Tribe's 14 hits and scored threeruns. Scott Elarton (5-3) pitched a complete game six-hitter,giving up three runs with six strikeouts and no walks.

Jason Johnson (5-7) allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 3-1/3innings to take the loss. Rondell White homered and drove inall three Detroit runs.
