Karlovic ousted by 82nd ranked player

Defending champion Sergiy Stakhovsky, ranked 82nd in the world, surprised third-seeded Ivo Karlovic Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Zagreb Indoors.

Stakhovsky, unseeded for this event, defeated the 6-10 Karlovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In last year’s tournament, Stakhovsky defeated Ivan Ljubicic for the only tournament title of his career.

In his other four tournament appearances in 2008, Stakhovsky did not advance past the first round. He will meet Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals Friday.

Seventh-seeded Croat Mario Ancic advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Teimuraz Gabashvili and Jan Hernych rallied to defeat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-2.

The feature quarterfinal match will send Marin Cilic against Antonio Veic. Cilic has a 10-1 match record this season.
