The Detroit Red Wings erupted for five unanswered first-period goals Saturday on the way to an 8-3 rout of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Wings’ first-period margin lead grew to 6-0 by the end of the second stanza before Edmonton scored three straight in the third.

Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, Marian Hossa and Brian Rafalski all had a goal and an assist. Five others also had one goal and Niklas Kronwall had three assists.

Netminder Ty Conklin made 23 saves on 26 shots before he was replaced by Chris Osgood in the third period in the Red Wings’ third straight win after a five-game losing streak.

Edmonton’s Zack Stortini, Dustin Penner and Marc Pouliot all scored in the third period.

Starting goalie Dwayne Roloson was beaten five times on 16 first-period shots before backup Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers surrendered three goals on 19 shots in the Oilers’ fourth loss in their last five outings.
