Cherry Hills chosen for 2012 U.S. Amateur
Cherry Hills Country Club in Englewood, Colo., will be the site of the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association announced Sunday.
Three U.S. Opens and many other championships have been contested at the Cherry Hills course. Phil Mickelson won the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills in 1990 before he became one of the sport’s top pro stars.
The members of Cherry Hills Country Club are proud of its longstanding relationship with the USGA, said the club’s president, Tim Schmidt.
The invitation to host the 2012 U.S. Amateur gives the club the opportunity to bring to Colorado the best amateur golf championship in the country.
The tournament is played each year in the latter part of August.
This year’s amateur will be played at Southern Hills in Oklahoma. The 2010 event will be at Chambers Bay in Washington and the 2011 tournament is scheduled at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
