Roddick, Fish win in San Jose
Americans Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish emerged winners Tuesday in the first round of the SAP Open, the first U.S. stop on the 2009 ATP World Tour.
Roddick, a three-time tournament champion and the top seed, defeated Swedish qualifier Michael Ryderstedt, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
The fifth-seeded Fish nailed 19 aces while eliminating Australian Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
American qualifier Todd Widom upset eighth-seeded Robby Ginepri 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
In other opening-round action Tuesday, German Denis Gremelmayr defeated Croat Roko Karanusic 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; Aussie Chris Guccione beat Argentine Guillermo Canas 7-6 (9-7), 7-5; and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis defeated Brazil’s Ricardo Mello 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The winner of this $600,000 indoor hardcourt event will pocket $93,900.
