Vancouver readies for 2010 Winter Games
Vancouver, British Columbia has begun its one-year countdown to the start of the 2010 Winter Games.
The Olympic venue will be joined by McDonald’s Corp. in the $110 million initiative.
McDonald’s, the world’s largest fast-food chain, said it would continue its long-standing commitment to the Olympic movement, which began with the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, France.
It’s one year out and, having gone through this before, it’s not very long, Vancouver’s Olympic Organizing chief, Cathy Priestner-Allinger, told the Vancouver Province.
With one year out, all of our venues are complete, which is huge.
Priestner-Allinger’s duties include venue management, medical services and anti-doping control. She won a silver medal in speed skating at the 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria.
Vancouver kicked off its yearlong buildup with numerous events Thursday, including performances by more than 200 children from across British Columbia and, at nearby Whistler, the unveiling of the Olympic torch design and torchbearer uniforms.
