COL BKB: Illinois 60, Northwestern 59
Demetri McCamey finished off a late rally by hitting a jump shot with 3 seconds remaining Thursday, giving No. 20 Illinois a 60-59 win over Northwestern.
Northwestern led by as many as 14 points in the second half and still had a seven-point cushion when Kevin Coble hit a jumper with 2:26 to play. The Wildcats, however, did not score another point.
Trent Meacham made a 3-pointer with 59 seconds to go to move Illinois within three and after a Northwestern turnover, Meacham’s layup made it a one-point game.
The Wildcats turned the ball over again with 14 seconds to go, setting up McCamey’s winning shot. Craig Moore’s bid at a winning 3-pointer for Northwestern failed to go at the buzzer.
The comeback allowed Illinois (20-5, 8-4 Big Ten) to move into second place by itself in the conference race, two games behind league-leading Michigan State.
McCamey led the Illini with 21 points and Meacham had 14. Northwestern (13-9, 4-7) was paced by 14 from Coble.
