Bernard Langer birdied his final two holes Friday to earn a share of the lead after the first round of the Allianz Championship golf tournament in Florida.
Langer finished with an 8-under-par 64 and is tied with Jerry Pate for the Champions Tour tournament lead. Fulton Allen is in third place at 6-under 66. Larry Mize is among six players tied for fourth at 5-under.
Pate put up the early strong number, getting an eagle, seven birdies and one bogey for his 64. He had four birdies in a five-hole span on the front nine.
Langer, who won the season-opening Champions tournament, was within sight of Pate at 7-under through 15 holes but dropped a stroke on the 16th. He came back with birdies at 17 and 18 for a share of the lead.
