Monfils upset in Marseille
Third-seeded Gael Monfils became the first major upset victim Wednesday at the Open 13 tennis event.
Monfils was eliminated in the opening round by Paul-Henri Mathieu 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, setting up a second-round match between Mathieu and Michael Llodra.
Llodra advanced past the first round with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory over Rik De Voest.
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic had to work harder than expected in his first-round match before downing Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (7-4), 6-4). Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the fourth seed, triumphed over Andrey Golubev 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in his bid for a second title in three weeks.
Tsonga’s recent championship came in Johannesburg.
In second-round action Wednesday, Feliciano Lopez fought off Dmitry Tursunov 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1), Mikhail Youzhny defeated Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 and Mischa Zverev was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 winner over former champion Arnaud Clement.
Djokovic will face Jan Hernych in the second round Thursday and Tsonga will take on Simone Bolelli.
