NHL: Carolina 4, Tampa Bay 1
Joe Corvo scored twice on the power play in a span of 39 seconds of the third period Friday night, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes past Tampa Bay 4-1.
Jussi Jokinen’s first goal for the Hurricanes came against his former team and Eric Staal had a goal and an assist in Carolina’s third win in four games. Jokinen came to Carolina from Tampa Bay in a trade Feb. 7.
Cam Ward needed to make only 12 saves to get the win.
Carolina moved within one point of eighth-place Buffalo in the fight for the last playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
Tampa Bay lost its fourth straight. Mike McKenna gave up four goals on 41 shots. The Lightning narrowly avoided equaling their franchise record for fewest shots in a game (11).
The teams have met five times this season and Carolina has won them all.
