NBA: Denver 90, LA Lakers 79

February 27, 2009

Chris Andersen scored the first four of Denver’s eight straight points to open the fourth quarter Friday and the Nuggets stunned the Los Angeles Lakers 90-79.

Los Angeles made only 30 percent of its shots and was held to what was easily its lowest point total of the season. The Lakers had won six in a row and 13 of their previous 14 games.

Both Chauncey Billups and J.R. Smith had 22 points for the Nuggets, who won their second straight and stayed 2 ½ games in front of Portland in the battle for the Northwest Division title.

Denver took a 66-63 lead into the fourth quarter and held the Lakers scoreless for the first 3:24 of the period. Andersen touched off a run to start the quarter that gave the Nuggets a 74-63 advantage before Kobe Bryant ended the drought by hitting a jump shot.

Bryant scored 29 points, but made only 10-of-31 attempts from the field.

The Lakers’ previous low total this season had been 87, produced in a two-point loss to Miami Dec. 19. This was the seventh road loss of the campaign for Los Angeles.
