Venus beats Pennetta at Acapulco final
Venus Williams beat Flavia Pennetta 6-1, 6-2 Saturday to win the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tennis tournament (Mexican Open) in Acapulco.
It was the top seed’s second title in as many weeks. Last Saturday, she beat France’s Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the women’s Dubai tennis championships.
This week, she found little resistance from the second-seeded Pennetta, the tournament’s second seed and defending champion. Williams struck five service aces and won on 26-of-29 first service points while evening her all-time record against her Italian opponent to 3-3.
It really takes more work on clay, Williams had said after a 90-minute 6-0, 6-3 semifinal victory against Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova Friday.
Her latest win gave her 41 career titles and was worth $37,000.
Pennetta was playing in her sixth straight Acapulco final, but was denied her seventh career title.
