Kansas' Bill Self was tapped by Sporting News as men's basketball coach of the year Wednesday.
He won the award in what had been called a rebuilding season for the reigning NCAA Division I champions.
The 11th-ranked Jayhawks (25-6, 14-2 Big 12) won the Big 12 Conference's regular-season title this year despite losing all five starters from last year's national championship team and fielding the youngest squad in Self's six years in Lawrence.
It's been as much fun as I've ever had coaching, the last two months,
Self said on the school's Web site. The fact that every day I've seen maturation with these guys is something that I didn't see coming.
I think coach has done a good job keeping things positive,
star guard Sherron Collins said.
Self was the coach at Tulsa in 2000 when he won a similar Sporting News honor.
His 2008-09 squad is the top seed for the Big 12 tournament in Oklahoma City and faces Baylor on Thursday.
The Bears were 65-49 winners against Nebraska in Wednesday's first round.
