New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman won’t be active in the trade market to replace third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who had hip surgery this week.

Doctors said Rodriguez will miss 6-9 weeks after having surgery on his right hip Monday at the Vail Valley (Colo.) Surgery Center.

I’m not optimistic about doing anything, Cashman said on the team’s Web site. I’m not going to be proactive. If something presents itself that makes sense, which is not realistic, then maybe it will be somebody different. I think our answer is here in camp.

He said he expects Cody Ransom, 33, to fill the void in Rodriguez’s absence and that despite several calls, he hasn’t spoken to any other general managers regarding third-base options.

With three major league clubs in six seasons, Ransom has a .251 career batting average, seven home runs and 24 runs batter in. In 2008 with the Yankees, he batted .302 with four home runs in 33 games.
