St. Joseph’s wins Atlantic 10 thriller
Kwamain Mitchell's layup with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday put St. Louis in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals with a 62-60 win over LaSalle.
St. Joseph's, Duquesne and Richmond also advanced on the tournament's opening day.
Mitchell scored 18 points and gave the Billikens a quarterfinal meeting with top seed and No. 19-ranked Xavier. They will play the opening game in Thursday's quarterfinal session.
Neither St. Louis nor LaSalle scored during the final 1:47 of the second half, leaving the game tied at 52-52.
All of the higher seeds won in the first round with St. Joseph's downing Charlotte 72-62, Duquesne getting past Massachusetts 91-81 and Richmond pulling away from St. Bonaventure 65-49.
St. Joseph's will meet Temple Thursday, Duquesne will take on Rhode Island and Richmond will face Dayton.
