Hewitt wins at Indian Wells

March 13, 2009

Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt won his first-round match Friday, downing Jan Hernych in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Hewitt — a two-term major champion from Australia — eliminated Hernych of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Hewitt won at Indian Wells in 2002 and 2003 and was the runner-up in 2005.

Igor Kunitsyn of Russia dropped American Vincent Spadea 6-3, 6-4, and Michael Llodra of France eliminated Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

None of the top 32 seeds — including 2007 Indian Wells champion Rafael Nadal, three-time winner Roger Federer, defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — played in Thursday’s first round.
