University of Virginia men's basketball Coach Dave Leitao, the first African-American head coach in any sport at the school, resigned Monday.
Leitao, who took over in 2005, was the 10th head coach in the 104-year history of the school's program.
Leitao led Virginia to a 63-60 record, and three post-season berths which included an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. He was named ACC Coach of the Year following a 21-11 season.
The Cavaliers dropped to 10-18 in 2008-09, including a 4-12 mark in the ACC. Virginia Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage met with Leitao Monday to discuss the future of the program and Leitao decided it was in the school's best interest for him to step down.
Leitao was head coach at DePaul University from 2002-05, compiling an overall record of 58-34 with three post-season appearances.
