COL BKB: Gonzaga 77, Akron 64
Josh Heytvelt scored nine points in a 13-0, second-half run Thursday that carried Gonzaga to a 77-64 NCAA Tournament win over Akron.
The Bulldogs, seeded fourth in the South Region, had a battle on their hands before finally ending the Zips’ upset bid. Akron did not score a field goal for almost 13 minutes in the second half.
Heytvelt finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, boosting Gonzaga to 27-5 for the season. The Bulldogs are coming off their ninth West Coast Conference tourney title in the last 11 years.
Akron, the 13th seed in the region, owned a 52-51 lead with 9:43 to go, but Micah Downs made two free throws to start the run and put Gonzaga ahead for good.
Heytvelt contributed four foul shots, a slam dunk and a 3-point shot during the 13-0 surge.
Darryl Roberts led Akron (23-13) with 10 3-pointers and a career-high 19 points. It was Akron’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 23 years.
