Murray, Federer earn semifinal berths

Andy Murray and Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., the first Masters series tournament of 2009.
Murray, the fourth seed, improved to 19-1 for the year by getting past Ivan Ljubicic 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Murray has already won twice in 2009.
Federer set up a semifinal meeting with Murray by downing Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Federer won this tournament three straight years beginning in 2004.
The other two quarterfinals will be played Friday when world No. 1 Rafael Nadal takes on Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Roddick meets Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic is the defending champion at Indian Wells.
