COL BKB: Missouri 78, Cornell 59
Missouri pulled away from a four-point halftime lead Friday and beat Cornell, 78-59, in a first-round NCAA Tournament contest at Boise.
Leo Lyons led Mizzou’s victory with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers, the third seed in the West Region, held a slim 29-25 halftime lead against their 14th-seeded and less talented opponents from the Ivy League, but a 49-34 second half scoring advantage and Cornell’s 36.5 percent shooting led to victory in their first NCAA Tournament contest since 2003.
DeMarre Carroll scored 13 with seven rebounds and five assists.
Kim English also scored 13 points, while J.T. Tiller added 11 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Tigers (29-6), winners of last week’s Big 12 Tournament.
Ryan Wittman led Cornell with 18 points and four rebounds.
Alex Tyler scored 13 with five rebounds, and Jeff Foote had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Big Red (21-10), the Ivy League champions for the second straight season.
