C.J. Anderson led four players with at least 13 points Friday and Xavier hit 53 percent of its shots to down Portland State in the NCAA Tournament 77-59.
The Musketeers advanced to the second round of the tournament for the 10th time in their last 14 appearances. They are playing in the event for the fourth straight year and are trying to equal their feat of a year ago, when they reached the Elite Eight.
Anderson had 14 points and Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, and Dante’ Jackson each had 13.
The Musketeers (26-7), seeded fourth in the East Region after being nationally ranked throughout the season, built a 42-35 halftime lead. They held the Vikings scoreless for more than four minutes during the middle portion of the second period.
Portland State guard Jeremiah Dominguez scored 13 points in the first period but was shut out after halftime.
The 13th-seeded Vikings (23-10), making their second tournament appearance, got 16 points from Jamie Jones and 14 from Andre Murray.
