COL BKB: Wisconsin 61, Florida State 59
Trevon Hughes converted a 3-point play with 2 seconds remaining in overtime Friday, giving Wisconsin a thrilling 61-59 NCAA Tournament win over Florida State.
Wisconsin (20-12) became the third No. 12 seed to win in the opening round, joining Western Kentucky and Arizona. At least one No. 12 seed has won in the tournament 19 out of the last 21 years.
The Badgers trailed by 12 at halftime, rallied to take a two-point lead and then fell behind again by seven with 4:30 to play in regulation. Another comeback almost gave Wisconsin the game in regulation, but Florida State (25-10), the fifth seed, forced overtime when Toney Douglas made two free throws with 36 seconds remaining.
A 3-pointer by Douglas with 1:16 to go in overtime gave the Seminoles a 59-56 lead, but Wisconsin closed within one on Jordan Taylor’s layup with 47 seconds left.
After Douglas missed a 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go that could have all but clinched it for Florida State, Hughes scored on a finger roll and was fouled by Chris Singleton. Hughes added a free throw for the final margin.
Jason Bohannon was Wisconsin’s leading scorer with 16 points and Douglas paced Florida State with 26.
