COL BKB: Siena 74, Ohio State 72 (2OT)
Ronald Moore hit a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left in a second overtime Friday to give Siena a 74-72 win over Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament’s first round.
Moore brought a thrilling conclusion to the opening two days of the tournament by making a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of both extra periods. He nailed one with 3 seconds left in the first overtime to tie it at 65-65 and then gave the Saints the victory with another 3 at the end of the second.
Siena, champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and seeded ninth in the Midwest Region, trailed for most of the second half before scoring the final four points in regulation to force overtime.
The Saints will meet top-seeded Louisville Sunday in the second round.
Moore’s dramatics came on a night during which he made only 4-of-13 shots from the field. He hit 1-of-2 from the foul line with 35.4 seconds left in the second overtime to put the Saints in front by one.
Ohio State’s Evan Turner then got into the lane for a layup with 17.9 seconds remaining.
Rather than call a timeout, Siena quickly brought the ball up court and Moore took a feed from Edwin Ubiles before hitting the game-winner. Turner’s attempt at an 18-footer at the buzzer bounded off the rim.
Ubiles led Siena (27-7) with 20 points. The Saints have reached the second round of the tournament for the second straight year, having knocked off Vanderbilt to start last year’s tournament.
Turner paced eighth-seeded Ohio State (22-11) with 25 points.
