COL BKB: Missouri 83, Marquette 79
Two free throws by Kim English Sunday helped Missouri forge an 83-79 second-round NCAA Tournament win over Marquette at Boise, Idaho.
English scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half, when the Tigers, the third seed in the West Region, took a 46-35 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second stanza, Marquette took a 75-72 lead on Wesley Matthews’ dunk with 3:33 left, setting the stage for English’s heroics.
Leo Lyons led Mizzou with 18 points and four rebounds. Matt Lawrence scored 16 with three rebounds, while DeMarre Carroll added 15 with eight rebounds for the Tigers (30-6), who face No. 2 seed Memphis at the Sweet 16 Thursday.
Jerel McNeal led Marquette with 30 points, four rebounds and three assists. Matthews scored 24 with seven rebounds, and Lazar Hayward added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (25-10).
Hayward committed a costly violation on an inbounds pass in the closing seconds, stepping on the end line while he still held the ball, before English’s free throws.
