Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong may have broken his collarbone Monday in a multi-bike pile-up in a race in Spain, a cycling magazine reported.
Bicycling magazine said on its Web site Monday that the American racer was in the main group of riders in pursuit of a four-rider breakaway when the accident happened.
There were reports that between a dozen and 30 riders were involved, the magazine said. The extent of any injuries to any of the other racers wasn't known.
The crash occurred on the 168-kilometer first stage of the five-day the Vuelta Castilla y Leon.
Race organizers said Armstrong was initially transported to a hospital in Palencia. However, Bicycling said Armstrong was at the Clinico Universitario in Valladolid.
Bicycling reported that Sean Yates, one of the two directors of Armstrong's Astana team attending Castilla y Leon along with Viatcheslav Ekimov, said Ekimov saw Armstrong sitting on the side of the road holding his shoulder.
He said, 'I broke my collarbone,'
Yates said.
Yates added that injury hadn't been verified, though it appeared to be the case.
