Giants pitcher suspended 50 games

March 23, 2009

San Francisco Giants pitcher Kelvin Pichardo was given a 50-game suspension Monday for testing positive under Major League Baseball’s drug testing program.

Pichardo, on the Giants’ 40-man roster, is with Triple-A Fresno. His suspension will start at the beginning of the 2009 regular season.

The Giants were disappointed to learn that one of our players, Kelvin Pichardo, has failed a test for a performance-enhancing drug, the Giants said in a statement. Our organization fully supports Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Pichardo, 23, was 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 46 games at Double-A Connecticut last season.
