Report: Alabama hires new coach

Anthony Grant has decided to leave Virginia Commonwealth and become the basketball coach at Alabama, the Birmingham News reported Thursday.

Grant led VCU to post-season appearances in each of the last two seasons. After putting together a championship season in the Colonial Athletic Association this year, his team fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to UCLA last week.

Mark Gottfried resigned as Alabama's coach in January.

Grant, 42, served as an assistant under Billy Donovan at Florida for a decade before becoming head coach at Virginia Commonwealth. His record with the Rams was 76-25 and his teams won 45-of-54 conference games.

Alabama finished 18-14 this season with a 7-9 record in the Southeastern Conference. The Crimson Tide lost in the second round of the conference tournament to Tennessee.
