Matheny named basketball coach at Elon U.

March 29, 2009

Matt Matheny, a longtime Davidson assistant, has been named men’s basketball coach at Elon University in North Carolina.

We were looking for a leader with integrity, character and enthusiasm, Elon Athletic Director Dave Blank said. We were looking for someone that is committed to the importance of the co-existence of athletic and academic excellence, who has been in that environment and would understand what we need to do here at Elon University to maintain integrity in both areas. We landed on Matt Matheny.

Matheny, 39, was on the coaching staff for 16 years at Davidson, where he also played collegiate basketball.

Elon and Davidson are in the Southern Conference.

Our mission is to give our student-athletes a wonderful college experience, Matheny said after his appointment at Elon. That’s our mission. We are going to prepare these young men for life after Elon. That being said, we want to go the NCAA Tournament. That’s a goal of ours.”

Matheny succeeds Ernie Nestor, who was 67-117 in six seasons at Elon.
