NHL: Boston 1, N.Y. Rangers 0

Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots Saturday in his fifth shutout this season, helping the Boston Bruins record a 1-0 win over the New York Rangers.

Thomas's effort came one day after he signed a 4-year contract worth a reported $20 million and gave the Bruins the top playoff seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time since 2001-02 season.

I'm very happy to be staying in Boston for the next 4 years, he said at a news conference before Saturday's contest. Knowing that with free agency coming up potentially this summer, you have to think about would you rather go somewhere else or would you rather stay in Boston..

The game's only goal was Blake Wheeler's 21st at 9:04 of the first period on a slap shot past New York netminder Henrik Lundqvist.

The Rangers have lost five of seven, but remain two points ahead of Florida for the eighth and final Eastern playoff spot.
