MLB: Florida 6, Washington 4

April 8, 2009

Dan Uggla hit a three-run double in a four-run fifth inning Wednesday as Florida rallied to beat Washington, completing a season-opening three-game sweep.

The Marlins began a season with a three-game sweep for the second time in club history.

Uggla’s hit off losing pitcher Daniel Cabrera (0-1) gave Florida a 5-2 advantage with one out following a 2-0 first inning deficit. It was one of Uggla’s three hits.

Florida’s John Baker had two hits and two RBI. Former Washington National Emilio Bonifacio had two hits and scored twice. The speedster increased his batting average to .571, and Monday became the first player to hit an inside-the-park home run on Opening Day since Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski on April 10, 1968.

The winning pitcher was starter Chris Volstad (1-0), while Matt Lindstrom earned his first save.

The Nationals got one RBI from Alberto Gonzalez and Austin Kearns, and have lost 19 of their last 22 games against Florida.
