MLB: Pittsburgh 7, St. Louis 4
Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez combined for eight of Pittsburgh’s 17 hits Wednesday, vaulting the Pirates to a 7-4 victory over St. Louis.
Pittsburgh has won two of the first three games in what will be a four-game, season-opening series.
Wilson and Sanchez both went 4-for-5 and both had an RBI during a four-run second inning that put the Pirates ahead for good. Nate McLouth contributed a two-run homer and Brandon Moss was 3-for-4 with a double.
Zach Duke (1-0) got the victory, allowing one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. He surrendered five hits, struck out four and also had a double. It took Duke seven starts before he picked up his first victory in 2008.
Matt Capps recorded the final two outs to pick up his second save. Todd Wellemeyer (0-1) allowed five runs on 12 hits in five innings to take the loss.
