Chad Campbell shot 7-under-par 65 Thursday and is the first-round leader at The Masters golf tournament at Augusta (Ga.) National.

Despite bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes, Campbell has a one-stroke lead over former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan.

He established a new Masters record for best start when his 20-foot birdie putt from off the putting surface fell at No. 5, giving him five straight birdies.

Later, he made six consecutive pars and finished with the bogeys.

I’m definitely happy with the round that I played, but a little upset with the way I finished, he told reporters. It’s just the first round, so we’ve got a lot to play.

Elsewhere, reigning British Open and PGA Champion Padraig Harrington shot 3-under 69 and shares 14th place with five others; Tiger Woods shot 2-under 70 and shares 20th; and Phil Mickelson shot 1-over 73 with, among others, Ben Curtis, Rory Sabbatini and Sergio Garcia.
