MLB: San Diego 7, San Francisco 3
Scott Hairston broke the game open with a three-run homer in the eighth inning Friday and San Diego overcame a rain delay to defeat San Francisco 7-3.
The Padres drove Barry Zito (0-1) from the mound after four innings, adding to the woes of the former American League Cy Young Award winner.
Zito signed a seven-year, $126 million deal with the Giants prior to the start of the 2007 season and has gone 21-31 since then. He lost his 2009 debut while allowing four runs on seven hits.
San Diego endured a rain delay in the sixth inning and had a 4-2 lead going into the eighth, then picked up three insurance runs when Hairston homered off Merkin Valdez. Luis Rodriguez singled and pinch-hitter Jody Gerut walked in front of Hairston.
Shawn Hill (1-0) worked five innings to pick up the victory. He surrendered two runs on seven hits.
