Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo, who had two shutouts last week, is the NHL's No. 1 star of the week, the league said Monday.
The NHL selects three stars of the week each Monday. In addition to Luongo, the league honored St. Louis goaltender Chris Mason and Boston right wing Phil Kessel for their play in games April 6-12.
Luongo stopped 88 of 89 shots he faced last week as the Canucks used a 3-0-0 week to clinch the Northwest Division title. Luongo had shutouts against Los Angeles and Colorado. The 1-0 win over the Avalanche was his ninth shutout this season and gave him a 33-13-7 record on the year.
Mason allowed only two goals in three games, making 72 saves. He also posted a 1-0 shutout of Colorado, while giving up just one goal each in games against Phoenix and Columbus. The win over the Blue Jackets locked up a playoff spot for the Blues.
Kessel had an NHL-best five goals last week. He capped the week with a hat trick against the New York Islanders. That gave him a career-high 36 goals for the season as the Bruins wound up with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
