Astros to retain Cooper through 2010
The Houston Astros have extended the contract of Manager Cecil Cooper through the 2010 season, the team said Saturday.
Houston won only three of 10 games to start the 2009 season and there had been widespread speculation about his future with the team.
We wanted to eliminate any confusion or lack of focus on the baseball team,
Astros owner Drayton McLane said at a news conference. (General Manager) Ed (Wade) and (President) Tal (Smith) approached me several days ago, and I said, ‘Absolutely.’
We’re pleased with the job that ‘Coop’ has done since taking over in 2007,
Wade said.
Cooper, 59, was named interim manager in August 2007.
Last season, the Astros finished 86-75 and were third in the National League Central Division. Entering Saturday’s game at home against Cincinnati, he had compiled a 104-98 overall record.
The Astros jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead and were ahead of the Reds 3-0 after six innings.
