Report: Diver quits school after bullying

April 24, 2009

Teen diving phenom Tom Daley of England has quit school after being bullied and threatened by classmates, his father said.

The former Olympian finished seventh in the men’s 10 meter platform at the Beijing Games, but Rob Daley, 38, the diver’s father, told The Times of London he kept his son at home this week after staff at the Eggbuckland Community College in Plymouth refused to take action despite his complaints.

He has threatened to move the boy to another school because he feels the bullying could affect his son’s performance in a competition in Florida next month.

The bullying is severe, he told the newspaper Friday. He has been tackled to the floor walking through the school field and in class they throw pens and pencils at him. Some have even threatened to break his legs. That was the last straw. The school has had plenty of opportunities to sort it out but it hasn’t been done.
