The Arizona Diamondbacks were set to name A.J. Hinch to replace Bob Melvin as manager, a baseball source told mlb.com Friday

Melvin was fired Thursday after the Diamondbacks lost 4-3 in San Diego, leaving them with a 12-17 record.

Hinch, 34, a former catcher who played in the major leagues seven years, is the team’s farm director. He has not managed previously.

Bob has done great things for this organization, General Manager Josh Byrnes said after Melvin’s dismissal.

Having worked with him for nearly four years, I have a great deal of respect for his character and skills. This is a difficult decision, but I feel that our organization needs to move forward with a new voice. I am grateful for all the success and memories associated with Bob.

The Diamondbacks also fired hitting coach Rick Schu and pitching coach Bryan Price announced his resignation.

Melvin was in his fifth season as Arizona manager. His overall record with the Diamondbacks was 337-340.
