Wandy Rodriguez and LaTroy Hawkins combined to throw a five-hit shutout Friday, giving the Houston Astros a 2-0 triumph over San Diego.

Rodriguez (3-2) allowed all five hits and struck out seven without giving up a walk in eight innings. He has given up three runs or fewer in each of his seven starts this year, but has only three wins because Houston has given him just 27 runs of support.

Houston has been shutout twice with Rodriguez on the mound. Hawkins worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Astros managed only five hits Friday and needed some wildness on the part of starter Chad Gaudin (0-2) to take the lead in the fifth inning.

Gaudin hit Ivan Rodriguez with a pitch leading off the fifth and, one out later, Kazuo Matsui drew a walk. A ground out by Michael Bourn allowed the runners to move up and they both scored on a grounder by Hunter Pence that got through the right side for a single.

Rodriguez retired 16 straight batters beginning in the third inning.
