Bobby Martinez wins Tahiti surf tourney
Bobby Martinez of the United States won the Bilabong Pro Tahiti surfing tournament Tuesday over Australian Taj Burrow.
The California-based Martinez scored a 9.73 points out of a possible 10 on one of his waves and went on to win the event with 18.46 points compared to Burrow’s 16.10.
I waited for the good ones out there and just got lucky, said Martinez, who moved up to seventh place on the Association of Surfing Professionals tour.
There weren’t too many waves and I was lucky enough to get a couple of good ones and not fall.
The ASP described the conditions at Teahupoo as
clean with 3-to-5 foot waves that suited Martinez’s prowess as a tube rider. Martinez used a borrowed board for many of his heats after breaking his own during the many lay days of the event.
Burrow’s second-place finish moved him up to No. 2 in the standings.
The ASP World Tour moves on to Brazil and the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
