Peavy rejects trade to White Sox

San Diego right-hander Jake Peavy rejected a potential trade to the Chicago White Sox late Thursday.

Earlier media reports said the former NL Cy Young Award winner preferred to stay in the National League and was weighing his options after an agreement in principle had been reached to send him to the White Sox.

A Chicago Sun Times reported he took advantage of the no-trade clause in his contract, which pays him $11 million this season, $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012.

The San Diego Union-Tribune had reported Peavy met with San Diego Manager Bud Black late Wednesday to discuss a trade proposal that would have sent four players to the Padres from Chicago.

Peavy, a 15th-round pick by San Diego in the 1999 amateur draft, has compiled an 89-67 record in 208 career starts with 426 walks and 1,325 strikeouts in 1,322 1/3 innings. He is 3-5 with a 3.82 earned-run average this season.
