Serbia wins World Team tennis title

May 23, 2009

Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic won their singles matches Saturday, allowing Serbia to beat Germany at the ATP World Team Championship in Dusseldorf.

Troicki downed Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Tipsarevic trounced Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-4.

It’s tough to explain, Trocki said. Pretty much, I can not believe it. If someone told me before this week that we would win here this week, honestly, I wouldn’t believe him.

The duo of Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev topped Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic in doubles 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.

Overall, the Serbs, playing in the eight-team tournament for the first time, won nine of their 12 matches and Saturday kept Germany from winning its fifth World Team title.

I think it is going to be huge and this is respect because (World No. 3 Novak) Djokovic was not here, Tipsarevic after Serbia’s victory. I really played well because I was 100 percent prepared for the match.
