Report: Ex-NFL star running for Congress

June 10, 2009

Former Buffalo Bills tight end Jay Riemersma has decided to run for Congress in the state of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Press said.

Riemersma, a Republican, filed paperwork to run for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra, who announced last December that he would not run in 2010.

Before he was a standout tight end for the Bills, Riemersma was a star at Grand Rapids Zeeland High School and the University of Michigan.

Since he retired in 2006 while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Riemersma has been a Midwest director for the Family Research Council.

Also running for the seat is former Republican state Rep. Bill Huizenga, while state Sen. Wayne Kuipers has formed an exploratory committee.

Whether it’s Sen. Kuipers, Jay, whomever — and I know there are others out there looking at it and thinking about it ““ we’ve got a game plan, Huizenga told the newspaper Wednesday.
