Roddick again a two tiebreaker winner

Andy Roddick, for the second straight day, won two tiebreakers in a straight-set win Friday at the $1 million Aegon Championships in London.

Roddick got by Lleyton Hewitt in two sets Thursday by winning two tiebreakers and matched that feat Friday in the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) victory over Ivo Karlovic. Both Roddick and Karlovic are known for their serves and they didn’t disappoint, piling up 50 aces between them.

Neither player had his serve broken and Roddick ended with 75 points won to 71 for Karlovic — the difference the win-by-2 tiebreakers.

Roddick, looking for a shot at his fifth Aegon title, next goes against fellow American James Blake, who beat Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Roddick has won six of the eight matches against Blake.

Top-seeded Andy Murray defeated Mardy Fish 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, dropping just five points on serve in the process. Murray’s semifinal opponent is Juan Carlos Ferrero, who was a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner Friday over Steve Darcis. Murray and Ferrero will be playing each other for the first time.

Saturday’s winners are to square off Sunday for the tournament title and champion’s check of $117,000.
