Team USA shocks Spain in soccer
The United States pulled off a 2-0 soccer upset of world No. 1 Spain Wednesday in Bloemfontein, South Africa, at the semifinals of the Confederations Cup.
The improbable loss by the powerful Spaniards ended their 35-game match winning streak, the most recent 3-0 over South Africa last Sunday, and was their first defeat since 2006.
America’s goals were scored by former New York Red Bulls star Jozy Altidore in the 27th minute and Clint Dempsey in the 74th.
Team USA was not distracted by the 86th-minute ejection of Michael Bradley, the son of Coach Bob Bradley, and advanced to the final after losing its first two contests in the eight-nation World Cup warm-up.
It next faces either South Africa or defending world champion Brazil in the final on Sunday.
