MLB: Seattle 8, New York Yankees 4

Franklin Gutierrez and Russell Branyan homered as part of a 12-hit attack Thursday and the Seattle Mariners avoided a sweep by downing the New York Yankees 8-4.

New York had a seven-game winning streak snapped, suffering through a difficult outing by CC Sabathia.

Seattle built a 6-4 lead through four innings and three relievers then combined to throw three-hit, shutout ball the rest of the way.

Gutierrez hit a solo homer as part of a two-run second and Branyan added some insurance in the ninth with a two-run blast, his 20th homer of the season. Ichiro Suzuki contributed a two-run double during the Mariners’ three-run fourth.

Miguel Batista (5-2), who replaced starter Jason Vargas in the fifth, got the win with his two-inning stint.

David Aardsma came on to start the ninth in a non-save situation and allowed the first two runners to reach base. He then retired the next three, two of them on strikes, to end the game.

Sabathia (7-5) gave up six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight.
