Tennesseans are saddened by the death of former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, officials said as police investigated his slaying Sunday.
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean each paid tribute to the former NFL player as police probed the circumstances of his death Saturday, in which McNair, 36, and a 20-year-old woman he was reportedly dating were found dead of gunshot wounds in a Nashville condominium, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported.
Andrea and I were very saddened by the news of Steve McNair's death,
Bredesen said in a statement. He has always felt like part of the Nashville family, and he will be sorely missed.
Dean added that Nashville will always be grateful to Steve McNair for his talent, his leadership and his courage. His selfless style of play endeared him to the fans of Nashville and all of Tennessee.
It's a crying shame,
Nashville resident Doug Jackson told the Tennessean at East Nashville's Three Crow Bar. He meant a lot to a lot of people.
I just remember his smile, how open and approachable he was,
Kim Dettwiller, who worked public relations events with McNair for 13 years, told the newspaper.
