AL All-Star starters named

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter led the American League All-Star team announced Sunday in New York.

The 38-year-old Jeter will be a five-time starter after leading all AL players with 4,851,899 votes and will be the oldest AL starting shortstop since 1971 when Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox.

Other AL starters will be Boston's Kevin Youkilis at first base, teammate Dustin Pedroia at second, Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria at third, outfielders Jason Bay (Boston), Josh Hamilton (Texas) and Ichiro Suzuki (Seattle), with Minnesota's Joe Mauer catching.

Among the pitchers are starters Zack Greinke (Kansas City) and Edwin Jackson (Detroit), and closers Jonathan Papelbon (Boston) and Mariano Rivera (New York Yankees).

The American League will carry a 12-game unbeaten streak into the July 14 contest in St. Louis.

The roster will rise to 33 players Wednesday and balloting for the final player runs through 4 p.m. EDT Thursday.
